Gamification
Reality is Broken is an amazing book that outlines how games make us better and how they can change the world. In fact gamification is now a very popular concept applied to many things we interact with today. By making learning experiences more engaging, interactive, and practical - gamification addresses many of the shortcomings of traditional career growth. Here are some practical ways to implement it:
  • Adaptive Learning - This approach tailor challenges to individual progress, ensuring that all participants can achieve mastery at their own pace. By continuously assessing strengths, weaknesses & progress, these systems can dynamically adjust the level of difficulty, the type of challenges presented, and the pace of instruction.
  • Realtime Feedback - Delivering immediate, actionable input to people as they navigate challenges & make decisions helps them gain a clear and timely understanding of the impact and consequences of their actions, allowing them to reflect, course correct, & refine their approach. The immediacy also ensures that feedback is relevant to current situations, making it more meaningful. Over time this cycle of continuous feedback fosters a culture of open communication & trust.
  • Team Challenges - These challenges encourage communication, cooperation, and collective problem solving, skills that are essential for effective leadership in modern organizations.
One big caveat when implementing gamification is to avoid setting up competition between people. Each gamified growth path should be individually tailored to create competition between the participants and the milestones.

Shadowing
This is a practical, hands-on approach to career development where people can observe and learn from experienced leaders in real work settings. It is widely recognized as a valuable tool for both early career exploration and ongoing professional growth. By pairing emerging leaders with established ones so they can observe day-to-day responsibilities including decision making, team management and strategic planning in action, participants gain invaluable insights into leadership dynamics.
An easy & practical way to implement this is to set up “buddies” to pair emerging & established roles together, and gamify the system so both parties can enjoy & grow from the experience.

Meetups
Peer-to-peer meetups foster collaborative learning by allowing participants to share their experiences, insights and challenges. These interactive meetings create a safe space for leaders to experiment with new ideas, practice giving and receiving feedback, and learn from one another. For instance, participants might role-play different leadership styles and receive feedback from their peers. This technique builds community while encouraging participants to view leadership from diverse perspectives.
When you have a set of peers on similar growth trajectories, set them up as cohorts and encourage them to establish a meetup. Additionally, guide them regularly on topics to cover in the meetups that help move them closer to career milestones.

Reverse Mentoring
Reverse mentorship flips the traditional mentorship model on its head. This approach fosters mutual learning and can even help leaders stay relevant in a fast changing business landscape. Emerging leaders are empowered to stretch themselves which helps improve confidence & communication, and also expand their professional network.
This methodology can be easily applied by using the same “buddy system” as shadowing, or by setting up meetups focused on group reverse mentoring.

Simulations
Interactive challenges that mimic real workplace scenarios allow people to practice decision making, problem solving, & collaboration in a risk free environment. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between theory and practice, leading to deeper learning and better application of concepts. Additionally, this can be used as another tool within the gamification framework.
Simulations take time to set up effectively, so the best approach is to design a few each year and run folks through the process so you can gather feedback to iterate & improve the experience. Over time you will end up with a bank of simulations that can be applied to many different career goals.

Over the course of my leadership career I have used many of these frameworks and found them to be very effective in engaging people to consciously think about and invest in their career growth. What other modern strategies do you use to foster more continuous growth with your people?
